The attached photo is an epiphyllum from our collection. It's a registered hybrid named Jersey Beauty. The blossom is approximately 5 inches in diameter. This blossom popped out in the last ten days. Epi blossoms last from one to three days and appear in late April and May. Epies are tropical cactus native to Central and South American jungles.

Beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteHow beautiful! Not knowing any better, I took a pc of cactus from my son-in-law four years ago and didn't realize that this particular species would die of cold. This cactus is finally alive and well. I had to throw away frozen cactus for a couple of years, until the local cactus grower told me to just cover it! Slow learner. The asparagus is popping up around it. Great photo. Can you enter it at the County Fair?
ReplyDeleteEpi blossoms only last one to three days. They begin sometime in April and go through May, if they bloom at all. I am a casual hobbyist growing tropical and desert cactus. I am nowhere near those folks who hybridize these plants from seeds. I don't have the patience to do that. I take cuttings from epis or buy them from two growers here in California or at the annual Epiphyllum Society of America show coming up in two weeks at the L.A. Arboretum. I propagate desert cactus from their "pups", which are off shoots at the base or off shoots from the body of the cactus. I occasionally buy desert cactus specimens to add to the collection. I often give epis and desert cactus away to friends and neighbors just for the fun of spreading the hobby.
