Great Horny Toads . . . They're Coming After My Guns!

By Kim D.

On July 14th, Democrat Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL) introduced bill H.R. 5093, the Children's Firearm Marketing Safety Act. The purpose of this bill is to direct the Federal Trade Commission to prescribe rules prohibiting the marketing of firearms to children and for other purposes.

More specifically, H.R. 5093 seeks to impose five, main restrictions on how guns may be marketed:

  1. cartoon characters cannot be used to promote firearms and related products,
  2. firearm-related "brand name" products cannot be used that appeal to children (hats, shirts, plush toys),
  3. firearm campaigns cannot be marketed to children,
  4. firearms cannot be made in colors or with designs that are attractive to childen,
  5. firearms meant for use by children must be labeled with specific warnings.
This bill, if successfully passed and implemented, will spell bad news for companies that currently manufacture firearms that are used by children for hunting and target shooting purposes. And, if they have any cute, cartoonish characters with their brand, they will have to scrap them and invest in new designs that adhere to Rep. Kelly's rules.

One such company would be Crickett Rifles. It would have to say goodbye to its cricket mascot, and it would also have to invest in new designs for the popular "Crickett" rifles for children.

It's a shame Kelly and her liberal counterparts do not understand that the key to protecting children is to educate them on gun safety. Children are inquisitive by nature and must be taught to respect firearms - not fear them.

  1. I seriously doubt this could pass judicial review. It is too broad, ambiguous and overreaching in its scope. Courts like laws that are narrow in scope, specific and easily understood by those it is intended limit or regulate. This proposed law is a liberal attempt to throw a pile of crap against a wall to see what sticks.
