A tragic shooting was reported last week on May 6th in Hearne, TX when 93-year-old Pearlie Golden was fatally shot by police officer Stephen Stem. Even though eye-witnesses report that the woman fired two shots before the police officer opened fire, this event immediately sparked a WTH moment in that it is hard to believe that a police officer could not find alternative ways to disarm an elderly woman.
As reported by the NY Daily News, Golden’s nephew, Roy Jones, claims that his aunt fired two shots into the ground before Stem fired five rounds at her. Jones had earlier taken her to renew her driver’s license Tuesday, but she failed the test. He said she became upset after he took her home. She demanded he hand over her car keys. He refused, he said. She went to get her .38-caliber revolver. That’s when Jones phoned 911.
Pearlie Golden’s death sparked immediate outrage as she was the second person Stem has fatally shot while on the job. He was cleared by a grand jury in the shooting death of a man in December 2012. Houston activist Quanell X wasted no time and within days organized a march demanding the officer be fired. He warned of "armed protests" if Stem is not fired. "Like hell will we stand by and let him have a third shot," Quanell X said.

Perhaps once the investigation is complete, the facts will prove Stephen Stem was a trigger-happy cop and overreacted in his use of deadly force against a 93-year-old woman. But, for argument’s sake, consider for a moment that when Pearlie Golden grabbed a gun and began acting in a threatening manner, she sealed her own fate. Also, consider police officers who are summoned to domestic violence disputes via 911 each second of every day around this country and how many of their lives that have been lost in deadly gunfire.
