Bradley Manning, convicted of leaking classified documents in the infamous Wikileaks case, is currently in a military prison serving 35 years. Last August, Bradley came out of the closet with the news that "he" was really a "she" on the inside and proclaimed that she would now be known as Chelsea Elizabeth Manning.
Today the AP reported that a request to transfer Miss Manning from her current residence at a military prison in Fort Leavenworth, KS to a civilian facility for gender-identity treatment has been denied. Instead, in his infinite wisdom, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has approved the Army’s recommendation to keep Manning in military custody and start a rudimentary level of gender treatment . . . The initial gender treatments could include allowing Manning to wear some female undergarments and also possibly provide some hormone treatments.According to a complaint filed by Manning, she asked that a treatment plan consider three types of measures: “real life experience,” a regimen in which the person tries dressing and living in the new gender; hormone therapy, which changes some physical traits such as breast and hair growth; and sex reassignment surgery. Due to the sensitive nature of Miss Manning's crime in that it directly relates to national security interests, for now it appears she will just have to live with what the taxpayers and the military are willing to provide.
