Will You Pray Again for Meriam Ibraham?

Tonight Meriam Ibraham once again needs your prayers because she sits in a Sudanese jail cell and faces up to seven years in jail . . . The mother-of-two was told the devastating news after being detained as she tried to fly out of the African country hours after a death sentence against her was dropped. Dr Ibrahim, 27, was charged with obtaining a false travel document and giving false information to immigration officials - and banned from leaving Sudan.

On Monday, June 23rd, the news quickly spread from Sudan that a court had overturned Meriam Ibrahim’s death penalty conviction for apostasy. Millions worldwide breathed a sigh of relief that Meriam and her two small children were freed from a jail cell and were allowed to join her husband Daniel Wani in a safe house.

Unfortunately, at least one person was outraged by this turn of events. According to the Daily Mail, a man claiming to be Dr Ibrahim’s half brother went to the prison in Khartoum the night she was released and, upon discovering she had been freed, flew into a rage and vowed to kill her.   

According to CNN, al-Samani al-Hadi, said: ‘The family is unconvinced by the court’s decision. ‘We were not informed by the court that she was to be released; this came as a surprise to us. The law has failed to uphold our rights. This is now an issue of honour. The Christians have tarnished our honour, and we will know how to avenge it.’ 

Speaking to Sudanese paper, al-Samani al-Hadi, said that Meriam had been 'kidnapped' from the family who she should have been returned to, not her husband.

'They did not let us know that she was about to be freed. It was a surprise for us,' he said.

What happened next can only be described as a horrific nightmare. On Tuesday, less than 24 hours after being released from jail, Meriam and her family were detained at the airport by the feared National Intelligence and Security Services, who were dubbed ‘Agents of Fear’ in a damning report by human rights group Amnesty.

A post on the NISS Facebook page said that its agents stopped Dr Ibrahim because her temporary travel documents had a US visa stamp on them. The statement said: ‘This was viewed by Sudanese authorities as a criminal violation and a disregard upon which the foreign ministry summoned the US and South Sudanese envoys’.

Dr Ibrahim’s lawyer Shareif Ali Shareif told MailOnline: 'The authorities do not have the right to hold her. They appear not to want to let her leave Sudan. They are restricting her movements.

Imagine being accused of adultery because the person you married did not share the Islamic faith? Imagine being raised as a Christian and holding those beliefs in your heart but having to decide whether to renounce Christ and live or reaffirm Him and die? Imagine being sentenced to being flogged 100 times and then hanged to death after you have given birth and weaned your newborn child? Then imagine the cruel twist of fate of being spared this death penalty and freed only for a few, short hours only to be swept back into another nightmare situation. How many prayers would you need?

At the end of May, Meriam Yehya Ibrahim gave birth while incarcerated in a Sudanese prison. A few days later, rumors claimed she would be set free; however, they were, in reality, just a ruse to mute world outcry over a women being sentenced to death for having Christian beliefs.

According to her sentence pronounced by a Sudanese court, she may soon receive a brutal, 100-lash flogging for adultery – because her marriage to a Christian man was not valid under Islamic law. Gabriel Wani, brother of Daniel Wani, explained what 100 lashes mean. A strong man with a whip doles out the punishment. Male prisoners are stripped before the whipping. Female prisoners start off with clothing, but the brutal lash soon tears them apart, leaving the woman bare-backed as the whip “takes skin” off. After a hundred lashes some die, while others hover “in bad condition” until they are executed.  Should Ibrahim be subjected to this punishment and survive, her death sentence by hanging will then be enforced in approximately two years after her newborn is weaned. 

In hopes to put pressure on the Obama administration to intervene on Ibrahim's behalf, on Thursday, June 12, pro-life Sen. Ted Cruz and leading pro-life groups staged a rally outside the White House. Penny Nance, the president of Concerned Women of America, proclaimed: “Today we are here to talk about Meriam Ibrahim, who is being imprisoned for her faith, specifically because she is a Christian. And not just her, but also her two children, one of which she gave birth to in chains.  As Christian women, we are talking today about Sudan but also pointing to the plight of women around the world. Women of faith are being persecuted and little girls are forced into marriages at very young ages. Meriam shines a light on this corruption and persecution."

Update: Condemned Sudanese Woman Gives Birth

As an update to a story previously reported on May 16th, Meriam Yehya Ibrahim, the Sudanese woman condemned to die for refusing to renounce her Christian faith, gave birth to a baby girl on Memorial Day.  

According to The Blaze, Ibrahim, 27, delivered in Omdurman women’s prison in Khartoum, Sudan’s capital, though her husband, Daniel Wani, a U.S. citizen, was apparently not welcome in the delivery room, CNN reported. It’s unclear what condition Ibrahim and the baby girl are in, but numerous outlets have noted that she delivered one month early and reports indicate that Wani has been denied access to her since the birth.

This news comes as attorney Mohamed Jar Elnabi continues to fight for his client’s release. Ibrahim’s 20-month-old son has also been staying with her inside the prison, though the child is permitted to leave at will, according to Elabi. The decision to keep the child with his mother was apparently made by Ibrahim and Wani. Wani, who is in a wheelchair, depends on his wife “for all details of his life,” according to Elnabi.

The birth comes after Ibrahim was reportedly given a chance to change her mind and renounce her faith, but she refused and now faces death by hanging, as TheBlaze previously reported. “I am a Christian and I never committed apostasy,” Ibrahim recently told a judge. Local media reports indicate that the death sentence won’t be carried out until two years after the baby’s birth, providing enough time for her to nurse the new child.
